Winter walks: a simple paw routine

Snow, ice and road salt are tough on paws. A two-minute routine, before and after the walk, makes a big difference.
Before you go
- Trim the fur between the pads. Long tufts collect ice balls that pull and rub.
- Add a thin layer of paw balm. It gives pads a light barrier against cold, slush and salt.
When you get home
- Wipe every paw. A damp cloth or a quick rinse in warm (not hot) water takes off salt and ice melt before your dog licks it.
- Check between the toes. Look for ice, small cuts or redness.
- Dry them well. Damp fur between the pads stays cold.
Short walks on the coldest days are fine. Most dogs would rather do two quick loops than one long one.
