Dry, cracked paw pads: what helps

A corgi's paw pads up close

Paw pads are tough, but they still dry out. Cold, hot pavement, dry indoor air and rough trails all take a toll.

What dry pads look like

  • Rough or scratchy to the touch
  • Small surface cracks
  • Peeling edges
  • More licking than usual

What helps

  1. Wipe after walks. Dirt, salt and grit keep drying the skin if they stay on.
  2. Use a paw balm. A thin layer after walks or before bed, then give it a few minutes to sink in.
  3. Watch the ground. If pavement is too hot for the back of your hand, it's too hot for paws. Walk early or late in summer.
  4. Keep at it. A little, often, works better than a lot once in a while.
