Why you should never use human toothpaste on a dog

Dogs can't spit, so they swallow every bit of toothpaste. Human toothpaste isn't made to be swallowed, and some contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.

What to skip

  • Xylitol, a sweetener in some toothpastes, gum and mints
  • Fluoride, made for rinsing and spitting
  • Strong mint foaming agents that upset stomachs

Xylitol hides in the kitchen too

Check labels on sugar-free gum, candy, some peanut butters and baked goods. Keep them out of reach, along with a few other common foods dogs shouldn't have:

  • Chocolate
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Onions and garlic
  • Alcohol and caffeine

What to use instead

A toothpaste made for pets, with a short ingredient list and nothing your dog shouldn't swallow. Read the label every time you buy.
